The tradition of learning at Lund goes back to the Middle Ages. Lund University (LU) was founded in 1666 and has since evolved into a modern centre of research and higher education. LU now enjoys a leading position, regionally, nationally and internationally. At LU a European cultural tradition going back hundreds of years lives side by side with dynamic developments in education and research for the benefit of society, today and tomorrow.
With eight faculties and a multitude of research centres and specialised institutes, it is today the largest unit for research and higher education in Sweden. The majority of the University is located in Lund, but there are also campuses in the nearby towns of Malmö and Helsingborg.
Our university has all the advantages of a wide academic range and highly-qualified staff. We offer a rich and diverse academic environment with creative links between students and teachers, international cutting-edge researchers and between university and community. Approximately 42,500 students study within any of the 85 educational programmes, the eighteen international masters programmes or the 1,000 courses.
Programmes and courses cover traditional academic disciplines as well as specialised areas like commercial aviation and the performing arts. The presence of many cutting edge research groups ensures teaching is linked to real world issues and advances. Education programmes for employees in the public and private sectors are another important component of the University’s activities.
The hallmarks of Lund University are a democratic philosophy, critical thinking, concern for the global environment and ethnic and social diversity. Other values important to Lund University include humour, innovation and a humanist perspective.
