Chapter 2
The educational system

A total of 14 HEIs are found in the Øresund Region. Among those are not included the many schools within the arts and alike. The 14 HEIs holds a total number of 150.000 students.

The universities in the region co-operate on creating educational options to the students. The universities have created a number of courses and programmes crossing borders and thereby taking advantage of competencies found on both the Swedish and the Danish side.

As a centre of knowledge the region is performing high. This is underlined by the fact that both Denmark and Sweden spend large sums on education (which can be seen on the tax level). This is one of the main reasons why the two countries have some of the best-educated peoples in the world.

The educational systems differ in Denmark and Sweden. This is occasionally problematic, but at the moment the Swedish system is undergoing a process, where it will reflect the Danish system, which is in accordance to the so-called Bologna model.

The number of programmes and courses offered is larger in Copenhagen, why an increasing number of Swedes cross Øresund to settle and study there. On the contrary Lund and Malmö in Sweden offer unique programmes within for instance media and culture, which attracts Danes.

In this chapter a thorough description of the educational systems in Denmark and Sweden are given. Along with this the chapter deals with the network organisation the Øresund University and other related topics.
