Chapter 4
HEIs' contribution to research and development

Innovation, research and development are the foundation for creating growth and maintaining the positive upwards spiral in which the Øresund Region is situated these years.

The universities in the region contribute to the innovation in both small and large businesses alike, through different kinds of co-operation. Among these are technology transfer, commercialisation of knowledge and the common use of the researchers’ experiences. The universities in the region are increasingly doing better within these fields, even though national expenditure and available fundings differ between the two countries. Sweden is one of the OECD countries spending most on R&D, while Denmark is lacking somewhat behind.

The universities are also playing an active part being a midwife for start-up businesses within different branches like e.g. biotech and ICT.

This chapter is dealing with themes such as university research and innovation and how that work is linked to businesses and industry in the region. In addition two case studies are provided along to give an in-depth view of how things work in specific organisations.
