What is the difference between a university and a university college?
 | Of the 4 member institutions on the Swedish side, two of them are ‘Universitet’ (university) and two ‘högskola’ (university college). This difference in title illustrates a formal difference between the institutions, which is based on historic reasons. The main difference between the institutions today is that universities enjoy the unrestricted right to award Licentiate and PhD degrees, while university colleges must apply to the Swedish government to be allowed to award degrees. In addition, most university colleges do not award PhDs. When it comes to the level of education, there is no difference between a degree awarded by a university and one awarded by a university college. |
